What it is
Otoplasty reshapes prominent, large, or misshapen ears so they sit in a more natural position closer to the head. Prominent ears are usually caused by an underdeveloped fold in the cartilage or an overly deep bowl of the ear, present from birth.
Through an incision hidden behind the ear, the cartilage is reshaped, folded, and secured to bring the ear closer to the head and recreate the natural folds. Both ears are usually treated for symmetry, even if only one is prominent.
It is commonly performed on children once the ears are near adult size, as well as adults. It reshapes the ear but does not change hearing. All surgery carries risks, and results vary.

Before the procedure

- Suture-related problems or stitch extrusion
- Changes in ear sensation
Avoiding pressure and protecting the ears during early healing reduces the risk of recurrence. Smoking impairs healing.

Otoplasty may suit children and adults with prominent ears. It is especially suitable for patients who:
- Have ears that stand away from the head
