What it is
Nasal septum surgery, or septoplasty, straightens a deviated septum, the wall of bone and cartilage that divides the two sides of the nose. When the septum is bent, it can block one or both nasal passages and make breathing difficult, especially during sleep or exercise. However, nasal breathing difficulties can be complex and have other sources than a deviated septum.
The procedure is functional rather than cosmetic. Working entirely through incisions inside the nose, if needed with open approach, the surgeon straightens or removes the deviated portion of the septum to open the airway, leaving no external change or scar.
It improves breathing but does not necessarily change the external shape of the nose. The two can be combined. All surgery carries risks, and results vary.

Before the procedure
You will receive instructions on medication, supplements, smoking, and fasting. The airway and septum are assessed, sometimes with a nasal examination, to confirm the septum is the cause of the blockage.
During the procedure
Working through incisions inside the nose, the deviated cartilage and bone of the septum are straightened or partly removed to open the airway. There is no external incision. An open approach may be needed in certain cases.
After the procedure
Mild congestion, crusting, and a blocked feeling are normal for the first one to two weeks as the inside of the nose heals. Breathing improves as swelling settles over the following weeks.
Results: what it can and cannot achieve
Clearer, easier nasal breathing is achievable when a deviated septum is the cause. It does not change the appearance of the nose and does not treat congestion from allergies or other causes.
Possible risks and complications
Septoplasty is generally safe, but all surgery carries risks. Possible risks include:
- Bleeding
- Infection
- A hole in the septum (perforation), rarely
- Incomplete improvement in breathing
- Temporary numbness of the front teeth or nose tip
- Rarely, a small change in nasal shape
Other causes of congestion, such as allergy, may need separate treatment. Smoking impairs healing of the nasal lining.

Septoplasty may suit patients with breathing difficulty from a deviated septum. It is especially suitable for patients who:
- Have a blocked nasal passage from a bent septum
- Struggle to breathe through the nose, especially at night or during exercise
- Have a septal cause confirmed on examination
- Are in good general health with realistic expectations and do not smoke or can stop before and after surgery
