Sclerotherapy
Injection treatment to fade small spider veins and thread veins on the legs.
Quick Facts
- Treatment time: 15–45 minutes
- Sessions: Often a course of sessions
- Anesthesia: None usually needed
- Downtime: Minimal, compression worn afterward
- Results visible: Veins fade over several weeks
- Results last: Treated veins fade lastingly
- Minimum age: From 18 years
What it is
Sclerotherapy treats small spider veins and thread veins, most often on the legs, by injecting a solution that irritates the vein wall so the vein gradually closes and fades from view. The body then reroutes blood through healthier veins.
It is a focused treatment for small surface veins rather than larger varicose veins, which need assessment and may require a different approach. More than one session is often needed, and the treated veins fade over several weeks.
What it can address
- Small spider veins and thread veins
- Fine surface veins on the legs
- The appearance of clusters of tiny veins
- Selected small veins elsewhere, assessed individually
It does not treat larger varicose veins or underlying vein disease, which need specialist assessment, and it cannot prevent new veins from appearing over time.
Before the procedure

The veins and your circulation are assessed, and your medical history is reviewed. Larger varicose veins or signs of underlying vein disease are identified, since these need separate evaluation.
During the procedure

A fine needle is used to inject a small amount of solution into each targeted vein. Several veins can be treated in one session, and compression is applied afterward.
After the procedure

Compression stockings are worn as advised, and walking is encouraged. Bruising and temporary darkening along the veins are common. Treated veins fade over several weeks, and a repeat session may be planned.
Results: what it can and cannot achieve
Fading of small spider and thread veins is achievable over weeks, often improving with a course of sessions. It cannot treat larger varicose veins, cannot stop new veins forming, and some brown discoloration can persist temporarily. Results vary.
Possible risks and complications
Sclerotherapy is generally safe, but it carries some risks. Possible risks include:
- Bruising, redness, or temporary darkening along the vein
- Fine new vessels appearing near the treated area (matting)
- Itching or mild discomfort
- Skin ulceration at an injection point, rarely
- Allergic reaction, rarely
- Blood clots, which are rare
Sclerotherapy is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding and in some circulation conditions. Larger varicose veins are assessed separately, as they may need a different treatment.
Who it suits
Sclerotherapy may suit people with small spider or thread veins. It is especially suitable for those who:
- Have small surface veins they wish to fade
- Do not have significant underlying vein disease
- Are comfortable wearing compression afterward
- Are in good general health and not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have realistic expectations and accept a course may be needed
It may not suit people with larger varicose veins or underlying vein disease, who need specialist assessment first. Your clinician advises the right path.
Why Skulpturkliniken
Aesthetic medicine at Skulpturkliniken
Non-surgical treatments at Skulpturkliniken are carried out by a physician after an individual assessment, within a medical, surgeon-led clinic. That means careful assessment, a conservative approach, and the reassurance of expert support behind every treatment.
Natural, balanced results
The aim is a refreshed, natural result that enhances your features rather than changing them. Treatments are planned with restraint, because subtle and well-judged almost always looks better than overdone.
The reassurance of a surgeon-led clinic
Working within a medical, surgeon-led clinic means honest advice about what a non-surgical treatment can and cannot do, and when a different treatment, or none at all, would serve you better. Your safety and a natural result always come first.
