Aesthetic Medicine
Filler dissolving
An enzyme treatment that dissolves hyaluronic acid filler to correct or reverse a previous result.
Quick Facts
- Treatment time: 15–30 minutes
- Sessions: 1, occasionally repeated
- Anesthesia: Topical numbing if needed
- Downtime: Minimal, some swelling
- Results visible: Within a few days
- Results last: Permanent for the dissolved filler
- Minimum age: From 18 years
What it is
Filler dissolving uses an enzyme, hyaluronidase, that breaks down hyaluronic acid filler. It is used to correct lumps, overfilling, or an unwanted result from previous filler, to restore a more natural look, or as an urgent treatment in the rare event of a filler-related complication.
The enzyme is injected into the area, and the filler typically breaks down within days. It only affects hyaluronic acid filler, and because it can also temporarily affect the skin's natural hyaluronic acid, it is used precisely and conservatively.
What it can address
- Lumps, unevenness, or overfilling from previous filler
- An unwanted or unnatural filler result
- Filler that has migrated from its intended position
- Urgent reversal in the rare event of a vascular complication
It only dissolves hyaluronic acid filler and does not affect other types of filler or your own tissue permanently. It cannot undo surgical changes.
Before the procedure

The area and the type of previous filler are assessed where known. Because allergic reactions are possible, your history is reviewed and, where appropriate, a small test is considered before treatment.
During the procedure

The enzyme is injected precisely into the area to be treated. More than one session is occasionally needed for firm or long-standing filler.
After the procedure

Swelling and redness are common and settle within days as the filler breaks down. The treated area may look flatter than expected at first while swelling resolves. New filler, if wanted, is usually deferred until the area has settled.
Results: what it can and cannot achieve
Reduction or removal of unwanted hyaluronic acid filler is achievable, often within days. It cannot dissolve non-hyaluronic acid products, may temporarily affect natural hydration, and occasionally needs repeating. Your clinician explains what to expect.
Possible risks and complications
Filler dissolving is generally safe in trained hands, but it carries some risks. Possible risks include:
- Swelling, redness, or bruising
- Temporary loss of the skin's natural hyaluronic acid in the area
- Allergic reaction, including, rarely, a serious reaction
- Incomplete dissolving requiring a repeat
- Loss of desired volume if used to reverse a wanted result
Because allergic reactions are possible, this treatment is performed where a reaction can be recognized and managed. It is avoided during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
Who it suits
Filler dissolving may suit people unhappy with previous hyaluronic acid filler, or needing urgent correction. It is especially suitable for those who:
- Have lumps, overfilling, or an unnatural filler result
- Want to reverse hyaluronic acid filler
- Have filler that has migrated
- Are in good general health and not pregnant or breastfeeding
- Understand it affects only hyaluronic acid products
It may not suit people whose filler is not hyaluronic acid, or who have a history of allergy to the enzyme. Your clinician confirms suitability beforehand.
Why Skulpturkliniken
Aesthetic medicine at Skulpturkliniken
Non-surgical treatments at Skulpturkliniken are carried out by a physician after an individual assessment, within a medical, surgeon-led clinic. That means careful assessment, a conservative approach, and the reassurance of expert support behind every treatment.
Natural, balanced results
The aim is a refreshed, natural result that enhances your features rather than changing them. Treatments are planned with restraint, because subtle and well-judged almost always looks better than overdone.
The reassurance of a surgeon-led clinic
Working within a medical, surgeon-led clinic means honest advice about what a non-surgical treatment can and cannot do, and when a different treatment, or none at all, would serve you better. Your safety and a natural result always come first.
