What it is
Facial fat grafting restores volume to areas of the face that have hollowed with age, using your own fat. Fat is harvested by gentle liposuction from an area such as the abdomen or thighs, processed, and injected in fine amounts into the cheeks, temples, under-eyes, or other hollows.
Because it uses your own tissue, the result feels natural and integrates over time. A portion of the transferred fat is reabsorbed in the first months, so the surviving fat gives a lasting, natural restoration. More than one session is sometimes planned.
It restores fullness but does not lift sagging tissue, which may need a facelift. It is often combined with a lift to add volume where tightening alone would look hollow. All surgery carries risks, and results vary.

After the procedure
Swelling and bruising at the face and donor sites settle over one to two weeks. The face looks fuller at first, then settles as some fat is reabsorbed, with the lasting result over a few months.

Facial fat grafting is generally safe, but all procedures carry risks. Possible risks include:
- Bruising and swelling
- Infection
- Partial reabsorption of grafted fat
- Lumps, firmness, or oil cysts
- Asymmetry or over- or under-correction
- Contour irregularity at the donor area
- Rarely, with facial injection, vascular complications
Facial fat injection is performed with care to avoid blood vessels. Smoking impairs fat survival and healing, so smoking cessation is advised.
