Microneedling
Fine micro-channels that stimulate the skin's own collagen to improve texture, scars, and pores.
Quick Facts
- Treatment time: 30–60 minutes including numbing
- Sessions: A course, then maintenance
- Anesthesia: Topical numbing
- Downtime: Redness for 1–2 days
- Results visible: Gradually over weeks
- Maintenance: Maintenance as advised
- Minimum age: From 18 years
What it is
Microneedling uses a device with very fine needles to create controlled micro-channels in the skin. These tiny, controlled injuries prompt the skin's natural repair response, stimulating collagen and improving texture, fine lines, scarring, and pore appearance over a course of sessions.
It can be combined with a serum or with PRP to enhance the response. It improves skin quality and texture rather than adding volume or lifting, and results build gradually.
What it can improve
- Skin texture and fine lines
- Acne scarring and other shallow scars
- Enlarged pores
- Overall skin quality and firmness over a course
It does not add volume or lift sagging, does not remove deep wrinkles or deep scars in one session, and is not suitable over active acne or skin infection.
Before the procedure

Your skin and goals are assessed and your history reviewed. Active acne or skin infection is treated first, and the recommended course is explained.
During the procedure

The device is passed over the skin to create fine micro-channels at a depth matched to your concern. A serum or PRP may be applied to enhance the response.
After the procedure

Redness, like mild sunburn, and slight sensitivity are common for one to two days. Gentle skincare and sun protection are advised, and improvement builds over the following weeks.
Results: what it can and cannot achieve
Smoother texture, softened scars, and refined pores are achievable over a course. It cannot add volume, lift, or remove deep wrinkles or deep scars in one session, and maintenance helps sustain results. Results vary.
Possible risks and complications
Microneedling is generally safe in trained hands, but it carries some risks. Possible risks include:
- Redness, sensitivity, or mild swelling
- Temporary dryness or flaking
- Infection, which is uncommon
- Temporary darkening of pigmentation, particularly in darker skin
- Worsening of active acne if treated too soon
Microneedling is avoided over active acne, infection, or certain skin conditions. Sun protection before and after treatment is important, and treatments are timed and adjusted to your skin type to reduce the risk of pigmentation changes.
Who it suits
Microneedling may suit people wanting to improve texture, scars, or pores. It is especially suitable for those who:
- Have uneven texture, shallow scars, or enlarged pores
- Want to stimulate the skin's own collagen
- Are comfortable with a short course and brief redness
- Are in good general health
- Have realistic expectations about a gradual result
It may not suit people with active acne or skin infection, certain skin conditions, or those wanting volume or lifting. Your clinician advises suitability.
