Reconstructive
Surgical scar revision
Surgery to improve the appearance of a prominent, wide, or restrictive scar.
Quick Facts
- Procedure time: 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on size
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia, sometimes general
- Clinic stay: Same-day
- Recovery: A few days to 2 weeks depending on site
- Exercise: Strenuous activity from about 2–4 weeks
- Final result: Scar matures over 12–18 months
What it is
Scar revision surgery improves the appearance of a scar that is wide, raised, tethered, or poorly positioned. The old scar is removed and the wound is closed carefully, sometimes using techniques such as a Z-plasty to reorient or release a tight scar.
The aim is to make a scar less noticeable or less restrictive, not to remove it entirely, since every incision leaves a scar. How a scar matures depends heavily on individual healing, so realistic expectations are essential.
What it can improve
- The width, height, or color contrast of a scar
- A scar that is tethered or restricts movement
- Poorly positioned or irregular scars
- Some raised or contracted scars
It cannot remove a scar completely or guarantee how the new scar will heal, and it is not the best option for active keloid scars, which need a specific, cautious approach.
Before the procedure

You will receive individualized instructions. The scar is assessed for its type, position, and behavior, the right technique is planned, and realistic outcomes are explained, including that a new scar will form.
During the procedure

The existing scar is removed and the wound is closed carefully, with techniques chosen to reduce tension and improve orientation. Where helpful, the scar is realigned with natural skin lines.
After the procedure

Mild swelling and tenderness are normal. Scar care, including support and sun protection, is important, and the new scar continues to mature and fade over twelve to eighteen months.
Results: what it can and cannot achieve
A less noticeable or less restrictive scar is often achievable. Revision cannot remove a scar entirely, cannot guarantee the final appearance, and may be combined with non-surgical scar treatments. Your surgeon explains what improvement is realistic.
Possible risks and complications
Scar revision is generally low risk but still carries some risks. Possible risks include:
- A new scar that may heal unpredictably
- Recurrence of a raised or widened scar
- Delayed wound healing
- Infection, which is uncommon
- Change in skin color around the scar
- Keloid formation in prone individuals
Individuals prone to keloid or thickened scars are assessed carefully, as surgery alone can sometimes worsen these, and a combined approach may be advised.
Who it suits
Scar revision may suit patients bothered by the appearance or tightness of a scar. It is especially suitable for those who:
- Have a wide, raised, tethered, or poorly placed scar
- Have a mature scar that has finished changing on its own
- Are in good general health with realistic expectations
- Understand a new scar will form
- Do not smoke or can stop before and after surgery
It may not suit patients with a very new scar that may still improve on its own, or those with active keloid scarring, who need a specialized approach. Your surgeon assesses suitability.
Why Skulpturkliniken
Reconstructive surgery by Dr. Matteo Amoroso
Reconstructive surgery at Skulpturkliniken is performed by Dr. Matteo Amoroso, a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a background in reconstructive microsurgery. This training in restoring form, function, and blood supply is the foundation of safe reconstruction and natural, durable results.
Natural, balanced results
Reconstruction is about restoring you, not creating something artificial. Dr. Amoroso plans every procedure around your anatomy and tissue so the result looks and feels as natural as possible and supports your everyday life.
Reconstructive precision meets aesthetic judgment
A reconstructive background brings a detailed command of anatomy, tissue handling, and blood supply, which matters most when tissue has been altered by previous surgery, treatment, or injury. From the first consultation, Dr. Amoroso explains what is realistic and which approach suits you, with honesty at every step.
Individualized assessment
Every procedure begins with a detailed assessment. We evaluate:
The area to be reconstructed and surrounding tissue quality
Any previous surgery, radiotherapy, or treatment
Skin quality, scarring, and blood supply
General health, medication, and lifestyle
Your goals, priorities, and realistic expectations
What Does Surgery Cost?
The costs of treatments are listed in the price section and often don't change. However, the price depends on the extent of the procedure, the technique used, anesthesia, surgical time, and whether additional procedures are combined.
Every operation is individually planned, and the final price is discussed clearly during consultation after Dr. Matteo Amoroso has assessed your anatomy, goals, and surgical needs.
All surgical prices include one of the most extensive, transparent, and safe warranty programs. The price is designed to be comprehensive and includes everything related to the operation, from consultation and surgical planning to the procedure itself, compression garment when applicable, direct access to Dr. Matteo Amoroso and the medical team, and unlimited follow-up controls during the first year.
