Reconstructive
Nipple reconstruction
Rebuilding a nipple after breast reconstruction to complete the natural appearance of the breast.
Quick Facts
- Procedure time: Usually about 15 minutes
- Anesthesia: Local anesthesia, sometimes sedation
- Clinic stay: Same-day
- Recovery: A few days before normal activity
- Exercise: Strenuous activity from about 2 weeks
- Final result: Pigmentation added once healed, settles over 2–3 months
What it is
Nipple reconstruction rebuilds a nipple on a reconstructed breast, usually as one of the final steps once the breast shape has settled. A small local flap of skin is raised and shaped to create nipple projection.
The areola is then recreated by medical pigmentation, a specialized tattooing technique that restores color and the appearance of the areola. This pigmentation step is offered as a non-surgical treatment and completes a natural-looking result.
What it can improve
- Nipple projection on a reconstructed breast
- A complete, natural-looking breast appearance
- Symmetry of nipple position with the other side
- Confidence in the finished reconstruction
A reconstructed nipple does not have normal sensation and is not erectile, and projection naturally softens and flattens to some degree over time. Color is added separately by medical pigmentation.
Before the procedure

Nipple reconstruction is usually timed once the reconstructed breast has settled. Position is planned carefully for symmetry with the other side, and the pigmentation step that follows is explained.
During the procedure

A small local flap of skin is raised and shaped to create the nipple and its projection, then closed. The procedure is focused and usually performed under local anesthesia.
After the procedure

Mild swelling and tenderness are normal and settle within days. Once healed, the areola is recreated with medical pigmentation at a later, non-surgical appointment to complete the appearance.
Results: what it can and cannot achieve
A natural-looking nipple and, with pigmentation, a complete areola are achievable. The reconstructed nipple does not regain sensation, is not erectile, and projection softens over time, so it is sometimes built slightly fuller to allow for this. Your surgeon explains what to expect.
Possible risks and complications
Nipple reconstruction is a minor procedure but still carries some risks. Possible risks include:
- Loss of nipple projection over time
- Delayed wound healing
- Minor asymmetry in position or size
- Infection, which is uncommon
- Need for a touch-up of projection or pigmentation
Healthy, settled tissue gives the most reliable result, so reconstruction is timed once the breast shape is stable.
Who it suits
Nipple reconstruction may suit patients who have completed breast reconstruction. It is especially suitable for those who:
- Have a reconstructed breast that has settled
- Want to complete the natural appearance of the breast
- Understand a reconstructed nipple has no sensation
- Are in good general health
- Are ready for the final stage of reconstruction
It may not suit patients whose reconstruction has not yet settled or who prefer not to have further procedures. Pigmentation alone, without a raised nipple, is an alternative discussed at consultation.
Why Skulpturkliniken
Reconstructive surgery by Dr. Matteo Amoroso
Reconstructive surgery at Skulpturkliniken is performed by Dr. Matteo Amoroso, a specialist plastic and reconstructive surgeon with a background in reconstructive microsurgery. This training in restoring form, function, and blood supply is the foundation of safe reconstruction and natural, durable results.
Natural, balanced results
Reconstruction is about restoring you, not creating something artificial. Dr. Amoroso plans every procedure around your anatomy and tissue so the result looks and feels as natural as possible and supports your everyday life.
Reconstructive precision meets aesthetic judgment
A reconstructive background brings a detailed command of anatomy, tissue handling, and blood supply, which matters most when tissue has been altered by previous surgery, treatment, or injury. From the first consultation, Dr. Amoroso explains what is realistic and which approach suits you, with honesty at every step.
Individualized assessment
Every procedure begins with a detailed assessment. We evaluate:
The area to be reconstructed and surrounding tissue quality
Any previous surgery, radiotherapy, or treatment
Skin quality, scarring, and blood supply
General health, medication, and lifestyle
Your goals, priorities, and realistic expectations
What Does Surgery Cost?
The costs of treatments are listed in the price section and often don't change. However, the price depends on the extent of the procedure, the technique used, anesthesia, surgical time, and whether additional procedures are combined.
Every operation is individually planned, and the final price is discussed clearly during consultation after Dr. Matteo Amoroso has assessed your anatomy, goals, and surgical needs.
All surgical prices include one of the most extensive, transparent, and safe warranty programs. The price is designed to be comprehensive and includes everything related to the operation, from consultation and surgical planning to the procedure itself, compression garment when applicable, direct access to Dr. Matteo Amoroso and the medical team, and unlimited follow-up controls during the first year.
